Alexander Graham Bell's Facts in His Biography

Alexander came from deaf family that practice on oral only. That is where Alexander's idea of orals method came from. He was born and grew up in Scotland, moved to Canada, and later settled in USA. He married deaf woman who also only was into oral. He was genius and were respected by people in old days that is how his theories influence people to oppress deaf people for so many years.

He was greatest inventor of telephone and hearing aids. He was also got involved with airplane invention. How can hearing people did not realize that Alexander's purpose for telephone was helping deaf people? He invent telephone to help deaf people to hear, but it doesn't work.

Also, he had helped banning deaf people getting married. His reason was he thought deaf people are growing becoming a race with the language that is not graceful for him. He thought preventing deaf people getting married would prevent from deaf people growing. His opinion was deaf people need be fixed and speak only that would help them better life. He had experimented that before he purposed the ban of deaf marriage. The reason, he thought deaf people needed to be fixed is coming from his family only practice on oral. His descendants follow his foot that is the reason his theories last so many years.

That how deaf people suffered oppression by Alexander's ignorant and audist for 120 years.

Sharyn --

AGB did not come from a Deaf family. His mother was Deaf, but late-deafened and oral. He did marry a Deaf woman (also late-deafened and oral).

Another bit of info for you -- AGB's father was a professor of elocution (teaching "perfect speech" to Hearing people who wanted to improve their speech). He invented a way of marking the phonetic sounds of the English language that he called "Visible Speech". The Boston School for the Deaf asked AGB's father to come and teach speech to their students. AGB's father wasn't interested, but AGB was, and since he knew his father's methods, he decided to try to apply those to teaching Deaf children to speak. So that is really how he got started in Deaf ed. If you want more information about AGB, I recommend Winefeld's "Never the Twain Shall Meet" which has a lot of information about the lives of AGB and EMGallaudet.

Don,

Wow that's amazing the fact information that you just shared. Thank you very much.

I google that book and google showed the book. I am going to read that book. I have several questions about original oral method. I hope I can find the answers for that.

Does it come from England and spread into Europe and influenced AGB?

Why deaf people face great audism for thousand years.

Why hearing people thought us as incapable.

That those kind questions that I need to answer.

Whoa. Now those are harder questions to answer. You really need a whole course in Deaf history to be able to answer that. If you watch Charles Katz's "The Deaf Child" myth/vlogs, you will get a basic course in Deaf history, although keep in mind he has changed some names a bit.

Oralism has been around for many many years. It started largely because of inheritance laws in the past during the Middle Ages that people had to be able to read and speak in order to inherit property. So rich families with Deaf children hired priests and other people to try to teach their Deaf children to speak and read. The strongest centers of oralism were actually in Northern Europe -- Germany and Holland, especially around the late 1600s - 1700s.

I think audism just arises from the fact that most people are Hearing, so they think Hearing is the only way to "be" -- if you read the Bible, you will see many instances of audist perceptions -- "Hear" the word of God, "Speak the commandments", etc. Also, Jesus "cured" a Deaf person, so he set a precedent that Deaf people need to be "cured".

I wish you could take my Deaf History class. You would get some answers to your questions from it.

AGB did not invent the telephone. Read it at http://hnn.us/articles/802.html.

Thomas Edison invented light bulb, not AGB. Google is your best friend.

Anonymous,

I agree with you that google is my best friend. I use it frequently. There are several articles about AGB invent light. Maybe it was lying. Thank you for sharing the facts. It will help more people to learn the truth.

Sharyn --

I teach at California State University - Sacramento.

I overlooked your part about Bell's inventions. Anonymous is right that Bell did not invent the lightbulb. And it is very questionable, according to Seth Shulman's book, that Bell actually did invent the phone. He definitely did not invent the hearing aid (some think he was trying to invent a hearing aid when he "invented" the phone) or CI (although of course his audist philosophy supported the CI's invention).

Yea I know about that. But I saw you say AGBell marry to deaf woman. In fact that I hear his wife really are hard of hearing. So that why Oral work for her. So what my view of AGBell, he want all deaf to talk and hear ONLY. But he forget that his wife is hard of hearing, hear little and it help her improvement to oral skill. Is that make sense? If I find link I will past to you. I hope I can find that information. I read in website 3 year ago.

Thank you for another clarify, I had removed that false information. I did quick research and found it was invented in Australia by Professor Graeme Clark of the University of Melbourne.
